A Day After Valentine’s Day Poetry Bordello

Feb
11

BorelloThe tradition of Valentine’s Day cards derives from the Roman Lupercalia fest. As part of the February 15 celebration, young men would pull a lady’s name from a box and pair off with her. This February 15th, 2014, you can continue the tradition by picking out a whore.

There will be A Day After Valentine’s Poetry Bordello at Schuba’s, 3159 N. Southport Avenue, Chicago, IL. The rousing entertainment includes Pinch and Squeal from Cleveland, Lula Houp-Garou from Dallas and the best poetry whores in the Midwest.

For the inexperienced poetry Johns, the Chicago Poetry Bordello recreates a Victorian “world of vice and verse.” One purchases a five-dollar token from the Madam Black-eyed Susan, The Good Doctor or another of the regulars. The token is exchanged with your choice from the stable of Poetry Whores who will take you aside for an intimate reading.

The evening begins with each of the poets reading a piece to give you a taste of their wares. Throughout the evening, there is live entertainment. This month features out of town guests. Neo-vaudeville yuksters Pinch and Squeal delight with their combination of corny jokes, silly songs and hat juggling. Lula Houp-Garou mixes circus skills and burlesque with equal measures of hula hoop and hubba-hubba. There will also be silhouette cuttings and tarot readings.

A Day After Valentine’s Day Poetry Bordello will run 8pm to midnight. Admission is $5 if dressed Victorian, $10 if not. More information on poets and the Bordello is available at http://www.chicagopoetrybrothel.com/.
