A Hot Steaming Mug (More Like a Demitasse) of Steampunk

CoffeePunkSteampunks tout tea, but I’ve got to have my two cups of java first thing in the morning. How can I reconcile my loves of steampunk and coffee?

The quick and inauthentic way is to grab a mug from a Steampunk from La Colombe. They have a café at 955 W Randolph, Chicago, IL, but sources say that they may be opening one in Bucktown. The Steampunk in question would be a $15,000 Alpha Dominche Steampunk 4.0 brewing system. It can brew up to four cups of coffee or tea at once with three grades of metal filters and an automated rinse cycle. Sure, it has a 19.3 L stainless steel boiler and water pressure between 40-70 psi, but where are the brass and cogs?

Dark Matter Coffee has a better understanding of the aesthetic. Jesse Diaz opened the Star Lounge Coffee Bar in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood in August 2007. He began roasting Dark Matter in February 2008.

Dark Matter MuralLocal artist Jason Brammer painted the commissioned mural for the Dark Matter roasting facility at 738 N Western. Cogs, steam and coffee!

Dark Matter Machine10Brammer also installed their “Dark Matter Machine.” He gave the working and decorative parts a beautifully decayed “psychedelic-steampunk feel.”

With blend names like Unicorn Blood and Absinthe Barrel Aged, Dark Matter is this guy’s cup of Joe.
