Steampunk events and gatherings are not just limited to large metropolitan areas. Some truly amazing, intimate, and fun filled events can be seen on farmsteads and forests just as much as in their urban counterparts! This past weekend, several Chicago area steampunks headed out on road trips for some starry skies and rural happenings.

Central Wisconsin: Cogs and Roses Picnic III: Orient Express at a private farm

[Written by Renee J. Knowles]
This past weekend, dozens of area Steampunks from Illinois and Wisconsin converged on a Victorian-era mansion and grounds just outside of Milwaukee for Cogs and Roses.  There could be found food and drinks aplenty, door prizes, board and lawn games (including an inventive Steampunk croquet), antique firearms demonstration, great company, and a pinata perfect for the theme of “Oriental Express”.  Attendees went all out in Eastern and neo-Victorian outfits for their trip and stayed late into the night, which culminated in a bonfire complete with marshmallows for roasting.

The hot tub, height of Victorian technology, was also enjoyed by many!

Southwestern Michigan: Steam Dream Weekend at Olde World Village

[Written by Rev. Capt. Samuel Flint]
In Michigan, a new Steampunk energy is gathering in the southwest side of the state! The Olde World Village, a burgeoning renaissance fairgrounds, held their very first steampunk weekend, Steam Dream Expo!

Some members of Steampunk Chicago and the Airship Valkyrie from Detroit were on hand to offer their expertise and information, giving several panels ranging from steampunk fashion on a budget to rounding out your persona. Thee Bluebeard graced us on Sunday with two packed and humorous shows! Vendors were on hand selling a wide variety of handmade creations, and the stage shows and sword fights were pulled from their usual renaissance period with a neat steampunk aesthetic.
