Airships, Zeppelins, dirigibles and lighter-than-air steam powered travel are common motifs in both steampunk ideology as well as fiction. The days of the airship have not fully vanished, and continue to occupy a fancy in the collective steampunk consciousness. It’s a timeless craft, from giant balloons supporting old ships to the modern, sleek blimps and proposed heavy lifters.
Karel Zeman, a Czech film director has a unique visual style, almost papercut in its aesthetic. Below is a clip from his 1960′s film “The Stolen Airship”. Enjoy!
“Sir general editor, look at the biggest sensation of the century. A new age is engendering.”

Airships are excellent.
I love Karel Zeman! Unappreciated genius from the Czech Republic.
My ship is too big.
If this isn’t an early inspiration of Terry Gilliam’s, I don’t know what is.
