There’s a nostalgic decay in the work of Chicago artist Jason Brammer. His Time Machines series incorporates antique items into his paintings, using the 3D materials to pull the 2D past into our world. It draws from Art Nouveau. His current series, Futura Obscura, uses rusty browns and coppery blue-greens to evoke 1930s daguerreotypes.
He mixed landscape and audio equipment in the Soundscapes series. UFOs and sea creatures met in Remembering the Future. His “My Morning Jacket as the White City” (pictured) appropriated an architectural image from Chicago’s 1893 World’s Exposition for a 2010 tour poster.
Futura Obscura runs from May 6 until July 3 at Jackson Junge Gallery. The May 6 opening featured live painting during the show. There will be an artist talk at 2pm on Saturday, June 4, at the gallery.
