After years of delays, Cuphead the videogame that looks like a vintage 1930s cartoon comes out on September 29, 2017.
Imagine being able to play a surreal Max Fleischer cartoon. Cuphead, the animated star of the game, must pay a debt to the devil by fighting pirates, bees and anthropomorphic flowers, onions and carrots. Cuphead, second player Mugman and the other characters are hand drawn cell animation set against watercolor backgrounds. Kris Maddigan composed the jazzy soundtrack with 13-piece big band and a 10-piece ragtime band. The gun and run game breaks down to 75% boss battles and 25% platforming levels.
Independent videogame company Studio MDHR was set up by Canadian brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer. Way back in 2000, they conceived of a game in a similar style, but did not have the resources to pursue it. A demo video debuted at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2014. As of that July, the art was announced to be 40% complete.
Cuphead is scheduled for a September 29, 2017, release. It will be available for Xbox One, Windows 10 and Steam.
