In January 2015, Steampunk Chicago featured Burning Brigid Media, a production company with an aim of creating stories for characters marginalized traditionally by their race, gender or orientation. They launched a serialized steampunk western, Iron Horses Can’t Be Broken, through their audio drama anthology podcast Synthesthesia Theatre.
Iron Horses Can’t Be Broken adapts local author Michael Coorlim’s novel, the sixth book in the Galvanic Century series. British detective Alton Bartleby searches the American southwest for his sister Sarah. Burning Brigid co-founder Kat O’Connor notes a twist of expectations. “At first, the story seems to play toward the standard patriarchal attitudes of the early 1900s American Southwest, but it then subverts those expectations, revealing there is much more going on than meets the eye. There are several surprises in store for both the characters of the story and the listeners.”
Episode 4 was posted on March 15, 2016. You can listen to the podcasts through iTunes, Libsyn RSS, and Burning Brigid Media’s website.
