April kicks off with visits from a couple of touring bands of swingers from Europe. Movits! play Reggie’s Music Joint on Tuesday, April 1, and Caravan Palace plays the House of Blues on Friday, April 4, 2014.
Movits! hails from Luleå, Sweden. They fuse hip-hop and swing, while singing in Swedish. Calling their music Äppelknyckarjazz or “Apple stealing jazz” in reference to the apple-stealing trousers worn by Swedish street urchins of the swing era), the band was formed by brothers Johan and Anders Rensfeldt. They spent three years crafting their first album with live musicians instead of samples. Their 2014 tour sees them making 10 stops in the US.
Paris-based Caravan Palace merges electro swing and gypsy jazz. They claim to have formed in order to make porno soundtracks. The trio began as a three-piece and expanded in the 00s via that old-timey social network MySpace. They have been praised for their use of traditional jazz and played the Django Reinhardt Jazz Festival in 2007.
The Movits! show is at Reggie’s Music Joint at 2105 S State Street, Chicago, IL. The door is at 8pm. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. The show is 17+.
