Get your art on this week when esoteric theater company Terra Mysterium performs its new play The Secret History of Prince Albert: A Tale of the Clockwork Prince on Friday, May 8, 2015, and artist Jason Brammer holds his Open Studio party on Saturday, May 9. The play runs on Fridays, May 8, 15 and 22; Brammer opens his door of perception for one evening.
In The Secret History, Terra Mysterium’s recurring Professor Marius Mandragore travels to 1839 where he meets Albert, the Prince Consort to Queen Victoria. The journey they undertake parallels the Arthurian legend, preparing a king for a time of need.
On the evening of the plays, the Professor will host drinks at the Lincoln Loft (3036 N Lincoln Ave, 2nd Floor, Chicago, IL) at 7pm, with the play beginning at 8pm. The performance is a $15 donation. Extra cash is encouraged for extra treats. Tickets are available through https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-secret-history-of-prince-albert-a-tale-of-the-clockwork-prince-tickets-16732001868.
Chicago artist Jason Brammer opens his door for an Open Studio Party on Saturday, May 9th. Combining painting, sculpture and assemblage, his works incorporates antique and vintage items to capture a sense of beautiful decay. According to his artist statement, “I want to convey the notion that hidden elements are at work below the surface, and that what we perceive may not be what is there in reality. Much of my work is illusionistic and is based on the ancient technique of trompe l’oeil (meaning “to fool the eye”). In many of my pieces, I paint a window that opens up to another realm or dimension, often revealing an expansive, timeless waterscape. In other cases, I paint a portal that gives a glimpse into the inner workings at play behind some surface reality. I aim to paint these windows, portals, and other flat imagery in my work to look 3-dimensional, and then further “fool the eye” by integrating real objects into the painted imagery.” His studio door leads to further portals.
Brammer’s work has been featured internationally in 2015. It appeared in The Art of Victorian Futurism exhibition at the Hangaram Design Museum in Seoul, South Korea and will be in 751 D-Park in Beijing, China through October 7, 2015. Other pieces were on display at Los Angeles’ La Luz De Jesus Laluzapalooza group show March 6-29, 2015.
The party announces his new Resin Print Series. For this series he coats wood-mounted prints with glossy resin. The event will also display new paintings and mixed-media works. There will be a musical performance by Brammer. Coffee and beer will be sponsored by Dark Matter Coffee. Their roastery and espresso bar at 738 N Western Ave. is adorned with Brammer’s mural work.
Jason Brammer’s studio is in Humboldt Park neighborhood at 1035 N California Ave Chicago, IL. The open studio party will be on May 9th from 6-9pm. The double doors on the right side of the building provide the portal.
