With the Congress of Steam coming up at Teslacon October 31 – November 3, the time is right for shifting alliances and smoky backroom plotting. What better way to get a jump on the clandestine machinations than to join a secret society?
Liz and Joe Mason will provide a history and analysis of Freemasons and other secret societies in the September meeting of the Owen Society for Hermetic and Spiritual Enlightenment. They will draw connections in their lecture “Masons on Masons: Liz and Joe Mason Discuss Secret Societies and Steampunk.” They will also offer suggestions on how one could be founded.
Their lecture will examine benevolent, fraternal and esoteric lodges. Are they still relevant today? How can they be used to provide community? How can they be used to make cold hard cash? What’s the deal with the funny hats?
On Sunday, September 29, The Owen Society is looking to present “Masons on Masons.” The presentation runs from 12pm to 3pm. The location is TBA, and this is why: to attend you have to RSVP, and all RSVPs will be served on a first come, first serve basis. All RSVPs will be served on a first come, first serve basis. Should the event reach 40 confirmed attendees, everyone will be welcome (and welcome to bring guests too). Otherwise, your name goes on a waiting list for one of 15 coveted slots and you’ll be notified the week of the event. The earlier you RSVP for the event the higher the likelihood is that you and your guest(s) will be able to attend, because then the organizers of the event will have enough time to reserve the venue that would have enough space.
Please RSVP by emailing Professor Marius Mandragore at kgreen5(at)gmail(dot)com to confirm that you will be attending the lecture. The Facebook invitation is at https://www.facebook.com/events/183135661861948/.
This event is part of The Owen Society for Hermetic and Spiritual Enlightenment, an association of hermetic, metaphysical, and spiritualist scholars dedicated to the study of psychic and occult sciences for the general betterment of humanity. Each meeting of the society features a paper or presentation by one of its members, followed by questions and discussion. It’s sort of academic and theoretical, focusing and experiential realms of magick and the occult, but also, it’s fun and weird. The National headquarters is located in Chicago, Illinois with chapters in Madison, Wisconsin and Fresno, California. Welcome to you all. If you want to join, there’s a group on Facebook:
Neo-Victorian and Steampunk dress is strongly encouraged at all meetings of the Owen Society. Blindfolds, hoodwinks, leather aprons and other ceremonial Masonic regalia for this particular event are appreciated but not mandatory.
